How to measure for a 4×10 vent

1. Remove the old cover.
2. Measure the inside edges of the duct opening.
3. Confirm one dimension is about 4 inches and the other is about 10 inches.
4. Choose the Floor, Wall or Ceiling product that matches the installation location.

Do not order from the outside dimensions of the old cover. A cover made for a 4×10 opening will normally have an outside face larger than 4 x 10 inches.

Is 10×4 the same as 4×10?

The opening has the same dimensions when rotated, but check the product’s width and height orientation, mounting points and directional features. A 10×4 label is not enough by itself to confirm that a particular 4×10 cover is interchangeable.

Does a 4×10 vent measure exactly 4 x 10 inches outside?

Usually not. The nominal 4×10 size refers to the duct opening. The visible face is normally larger so it can cover the opening edges.

Can I use the same 4×10 cover on a floor and wall?

Choose the product intended for the installation location. Floor, wall and ceiling covers can have different construction, mounting and use requirements even when the duct opening is the same size.
