Vent cover sizes are normally based on the duct opening they fit—not the outside dimensions of the old grille or register. Measuring the opening first is the simplest way to avoid ordering the wrong size.
The rule: measure the duct opening
Remove the existing cover and measure the opening from inside edge to inside edge. Record both dimensions in inches. If the opening is 4 inches by 10 inches, shop a 4×10 vent cover or register. The finished face of the new cover may be larger than 4 x 10 because it needs to overlap the opening.
How to measure in 4 steps
- Remove the old cover. You need access to the actual floor, wall or ceiling opening.
- Measure the opening width. Measure inside edge to inside edge at the opening itself.
- Measure the opening height or length. Record the second inside dimension the same way.
- Match those dimensions to the nominal product size. Do not round to a nearby size just because it is common.
What not to measure
Do not use the old cover’s outside face dimensions as your vent size. Faceplates and frames usually extend beyond the duct opening, so an old cover can measure larger than its nominal size.
Floor vent covers

Wall vent covers
For wall vents, remove the existing grille and measure the wall opening. Match both dimensions to the product size and note whether the opening is square or rectangular.
Ceiling vent covers
For ceiling vents, measure the ceiling opening itself after the old cover is safely removed. Support the cover while releasing its fixings and use suitable access equipment; ask an installer for help with heavy covers or difficult access. Check the replacement cover’s mounting requirements and surrounding clearance as well as the opening dimensions.
Common measuring questions
Does a 4×10 vent cover measure exactly 4 x 10 inches on the outside?
Usually not. The 4×10 name refers to the duct opening the cover is designed to fit. The visible face is normally larger so it can overlap the opening.
What if my opening is 10 x 4 instead of 4 x 10?
The two measurements describe the same rectangle when rotated, but the products are not always interchangeable. Check the product drawing for width and height orientation, mounting points and any directional features before ordering.
Can I round an unusual opening to the nearest standard size?
Do not assume a nearby size will fit. Measure carefully and look for the exact nominal opening in the catalog.
Can I trust the size printed on my old vent?
Use it as a clue, but verify the actual opening before ordering. Renovations, flooring changes and previous replacements can create mismatches.
