How to Measure Vent Covers
Measure the duct opening, not the outside of the old vent cover. If the opening measures 4 × 10 inches, start with a nominal 4 × 10 vent cover or register.

The measuring method
Four steps to the right nominal size.
Use a rigid tape measure and record the opening dimensions in inches.
- 01Remove the old cover
You need access to the actual duct or finished opening. Do not measure the old grille face.
- 02Measure the first inside dimension
Measure from inside edge to inside edge at the opening itself.
- 03Measure the second inside dimension
Record the other inside dimension the same way. Check more than one point if the opening is irregular.
- 04Match the nominal size
An opening that measures 4 × 10 inches calls for a nominal 4 × 10 product. Do not size from the faceplate.
The important distinction
Opening size ≠ outside cover size.
Example4 × 10 opening → shop 4 × 10
The visible face is normally larger because it needs to overlap the floor, wall or ceiling around the opening.
By installation location
Measure the opening the same way, then check the product details.

Remove the existing grille and measure the wall opening itself. Confirm whether your opening is square or rectangular and review the mounting method.

What not to use as your vent size.
The outside face of the old cover
Frames and faceplates usually extend beyond the opening.
A size printed on the old vent without checking
Use it as a clue, then verify the actual opening.
A rounded “close enough” measurement
Do not assume a nearby standard size will fit an unusual opening.
Only one side of an irregular opening
Check width and length in more than one place if the opening is not perfectly square.

Measurement FAQs
Does a 4 × 10 vent cover measure exactly 4 × 10 inches outside?+
Usually not. The 4 × 10 name refers to the nominal duct opening. The visible face is typically larger so it can overlap the opening.
What if my opening measures 10 × 4 instead of 4 × 10?+
Those dimensions describe the same rectangle when rotated, but product orientation and mounting can matter. Check the product drawing and installation details.
What if my opening is slightly smaller or larger than a listed size?+
Do not assume the nearest standard size will fit. Recheck the opening carefully and contact us before ordering if the measurements do not match a listed nominal size.
Should I measure before or after new flooring is installed?+
For a finished-floor vent, use the final opening in the finished floor whenever possible. Flooring changes can affect the opening and surrounding surface.
